So after reading Rick Steves some more we learned that the poor service we think we have been getting has some structure to it. Oh, so we understand now that it is deemed rude for servers to bring bill without being asked and that in most restaurants when you are seated at your table it is yours for the night and there is no hurry. OK, we apologize somewhat for our ignorance.
Today was almost as long as yesterday. Up early once again to catch train to Versailles. Found the train station like we live here and within 35min on the walkway to the great Versailles Palace.
We recently seen a documentary on this place and decided then we would come out for a day.
The first part of the tour was super then the crowds caught us. It is difficult to slow down to take it all in with the frantic pace most visitors (who appear to be essentially all groups) keep, you seem to just get caught in their wake.
The place is overwhelming both from the shear size and the massive numbers for people. We simply cannot fathom the "busy" season. Really, 10,000 more people (and the same number of toilets)?
The weather was pretty warm, so once we hit the gardens outdoors we enjoyed aimless meandering throughout the hectares and hectares of the gardens (which really are manicured forests, pretty much all trees and mazes, nothing like Buchart).
Would take 2-3 days to really explore this site. And maybe if we do again, we will check in advance to see if any of the hundreds of fountains would actually be "on". What a disappointment.
Trained back to apartment where I updated this blog before happy hour at 6pm (30 more min). Then our final dinner in Paris and one last walk-about the Tower tonight from a different vantage point.
We went off the beaten path as they say, enjoyed happy hour at one place then settled in for a quiet intimate dinner in this pretty small place.
Yes, it was that small, bar on one half and dining the other. And excellent cuisine too.
So they don't worry about max number of people for seating at these places. They just crowd around the bar front, and put their drinks on whatever.
Tomorrow scares me as we pick up car rental and depart Paris for the Loire Valley. After witnessing the chaos with the un-lined multi-laned multi-exit round-a-bouts I am petrified.
